Examining the Measurement Properties of the Human Beauty Value Scale in English and Japanese

Previous studies underlined the importance of the concept of beauty for the perception of self and others, and its relevance for the understanding of individuals and their attitudes toward peers. In this body of literature four dimensions of beauty values have been proposed: superiority, self-development, individuality, and authenticity (Kim and Lee 2018). The current study aims at developing and examining the measurement properties of selfreported measures of the Human Beauty Value Scale (HBV; Kim and Lee 2018) in two countries and using two languages, Denmark (English) and Japan (Japanese), for males and females. We collected data using online tools and controlled for sociodemographic variables to account for sampling differences in terms of age, education, and social status. We began with exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis to explore whether the theoretical dimensions can be validated by the data in the different samples. In the next step we applied multigroup confirmatory factor analysis (MGCFA) to test whether the measurements are equivalent across groups.
