Introduction: The challenges of wars and disasters have historically driven innovation in plastic surgery. Plastic surgeons were compelled to advance the management of complex wounds and develop groundbreaking techniques to reconstruct disfigured bodies. This profound link between exigent circumstances and plastic surgery has been overlooked in recent years. Not only can plastic surgeons innovate under pressure, but they also adapt their expertise to diverse challenges, making them critical players in disaster response. This study examines the pivotal role of plastic surgeons in disasters. Methods: This study conducted a comprehensive review of the literature to analyze the role of plastic surgeons in disaster response. Peer-reviewed journals, case reports, and historical accounts were examined to identify their contributions to both acute trauma management and long-term recovery. The review focused on four key areas: (1) types of injuries commonly encountered in disaster scenarios; (2) specialized plastic surgery techniques; (3) the role of plastic surgeons within multidisciplinary disaster response teams; (4) long-term care and rehabilitation. Results: In modern disaster scenarios, plastic surgeons bring unique and indispensable skill sets. They excel in managing complex injuries such as burns, wounds, and craniofacial trauma, employing skin grafts and free flaps. Plastic surgeons can also address long-term recovery needs, restoring functionality and aesthetic integrity. Their expertise makes them a vital component of disaster response teams, capable of addressing both immediate and prolonged reconstructive challenges. Including plastic surgeons in disaster preparedness and response plans is essential to ensure comprehensive care. Conclusion: Plastic surgeons play a critical role in disaster response, offering specialized skills in managing complex injuries. Their expertise in microsurgery, burns, wound care, trauma, and reconstruction makes them indispensable members of disaster response teams. Integrating plastic surgeons into disaster preparedness plans is essential.
