ABSTRACT Research on innovative methods for the recycling of battery waste materials using electrochemical procedures is on the rise. Although traditional electrowinning has been established in industrial applications for years, more sophisticated methods are a focus in current research to improve leaching reactions for a reduced the need for hazardous reagents. Aside from recovery of transition metals by electrochemistry, also their separation or the reuse of end‐of‐life materials with the goal of reducing processing steps and environmental impact is of growing interest. In addition, advanced methods for lithium recovery from scrap materials are investigated using electrodialysis and electrochemical intercalation methods for purification. The coupling of individual processes like leaching reagent generation and recovery by electrowinning is of great interest to the field to improve the energy efficiency.
