Abstract Background: The difference in insertion characteristics could lead to varying haemodynamic response after the insertion of Ambu AuraGain™ and ProSeal™ laryngeal mask airways (LMA). We could not, however, locate any study comparing haemodynamic response. Thus, the present study was designed with the aim to compare the haemodynamic response in known hypertensives with the hypothesis that due to the better ease of insertion of ProSeal LMA as shown in previous studies, the haemodynamic response after its insertion will be lesser than Ambu AuraGain insertion. Materials and Methods: It was a randomised controlled study. Patients with American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status II/III, patients of either gender, age of 18–60 years, mouth opening: three-finger breadth, who were known hypertensives and scheduled for elective surgery with supraglottic airway devices as airway device were included. The primary outcome measures were haemodynamic parameters. Intergroup comparison of quantitative data was done using unpaired t -test/Mann–Whitney test and the Chi-square or Fisher’s exact test for qualitative data. Results: The mean arterial pressure did not show any significant difference between the two groups, at any of the observed time points ( P = 0.221). The ease of insertion and thus the number of single attempt insertions were significantly greater for ProSeal as compared to Ambu AuraGain ( P = 0.028% and P = 0.022). Conclusion: When choosing between a ProSeal LMA and Ambu AuraGain for airway control in hypertensive patients, there is no difference in haemodynamic response, even though insertion may be more difficult with the Ambu AuraGain.
