Abstract: Colorism is a form of discrimination targeting people with a darker skin tone. While the negative effects of colorism on Black women’s mental health are well-established, few have considered how colorism may manifest differently across contexts and lead to distinct mental health outcomes. Accordingly, the current study investigated the effects of colorist experiences in dating on Black women’s mental health, and the potential mediating role of self-compassion. Results showed that more colorist dating experiences were associated with lower self-compassion, and subsequently greater symptoms of social anxiety. Study implications for researchers and mental health providers are discussed.
