Meningitis Caused by Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium – A Growing Concern

Meningitis caused by Vancomycin resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE) is an uncommon but serious nosocomial infection with limited therapeutic options. We report the three cases of VRE meningitis: A postneurosurgical adult with linezolid-resistant VRE, a diabetic patient with chronic kidney disease who developed spontaneous VRE meningitis and succumbed to her illness, and a preterm neonate with late-onset meningitis who recovered with linezolid therapy. These cases highlight the variety of clinical settings, diagnostic challenges, and limited antimicrobial choices associated with VRE meningitis. Early recognition, targeted antibiotic therapy, and strict infection control measures are essential to prevent mortality and reduce transmission.
