Abstract Purpose This study investigates how martial arts contribute to the moral development and pursuit of autonomy of their practitioners by analyzing Carlos’s trajectory, a martial arts master. The objective was to understand the impact of martial arts practices on the construction of autonomy and moral emancipation, based on the theories of Ciampa, Habermas, and Honneth. Methods This is a qualitative study with a life history narrative collected through a semi-structured interview. The analysis identified four categories: identity metamorphoses, pursuit of autonomy, hierarchy and traditions, and emancipation. Results The results revealed that martial arts not only enabled the overcoming of fears and insecurities but also contributed to the construction of self-control and moral responsibility in Carlos. The hierarchy and traditions of the sport were essential for the formation of an ethical identity and the development of his autonomy. Conclusion It is concluded that martial arts act as tools for moral and social formation, promoting significant personal transformations and expanding social commitment.
