In today’s rapidly interconnected and digital world, technology stands as a transformative force propelling the advancement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially across higher education institutions in India. By leveraging innovative tools such as online learning platforms, virtual classrooms, and adaptive technologies, universities are significantly expanding access to quality education and bridging long-standing inequalities. Recent data reveals that over 75% of higher education institutions in India have integrated some form of digital learning platforms, enhancing inclusivity and learner engagement (AIU Report, 2024). Technology not only broadens educational horizons but also underpins cutting-edge research in critical domains such as climate action, renewable energy innovation, and sustainable industrialization, aligning with the global agenda’s priority targets. Moreover, technology plays a pivotal role in advancing gender equality and empowerment among students and faculty by dismantling systemic barriers through flexible and remote learning solutions. Campus-wide implementation of smart technologies optimizes energy usage, reduces waste, and promotes sustainable resource management directly contributing to institutional sustainability goals. The rapidly growing adoption of Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), and blockchain further accelerates these efforts by facilitating data-driven decision-making and strengthened governance, as demonstrated by successful initiatives like the Digital India program (UNDP, 2025). This paper offers a comprehensive overview of how India’s higher education institutions can harness technological advancements not only to enhance academic outcomes but also to serve as catalysts in achieving the SDGs, fostering inclusive societies, and addressing urgent global challenges.
