India’s rural society, home to a majority of the population, remains central to achieving sustainable development. This paper examines how far India’s rural development trajectory aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on livelihoods, poverty, agriculture, basic services, and environmental sustainability. Using secondary data from authoritative sources such as NITI Aayog’s SDG India Index, UNDP Human Development Reports, World Bank indicators, MoSPI/PLFS releases, and key government dashboards and documents, the study synthesizes major trends and identifies persistent structural constraints. Findings indicate measurable progress in SDG performance and poverty reduction, alongside improvements in rural employment indicators and service delivery. However, uneven implementation, climate and water stress, livelihood vulnerability, digital divides, and persistent inequalities (social, gender, and regional) continue to limit sustainability outcomes. The paper concludes with evidence-informed recommendations to strengthen rural institutions, accelerate climate-resilient livelihoods, improve human capital, and localize SDGs through accountable governance.
