The present edited volume, Transactions in Xinjiang: Cultural, Socio-economic and Historical Sources on the Chinese Western Regions (1750–1976), is based on papers presented at an international workshop held at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin from 16 to 18 July 2025. The workshop was organized in cooperation with the Department for Chinese History at the Ruhr University Bochum and the project Remote Ethnography of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region at the University of Würzburg. The volume presents current international scholarship from a broad range of disciplines, covering the history, society, economy, and culture of Xinjiang. The contributions address the role of the state and military in Xinjiang during the Qing period; processes of economic and social transformation in the transition from the Qing dynasty to the Republic of China; questions of culture, religion, and identity in western China and Central Asia; as well as contemporary Xinjiang and its diaspora.
