For many trans artists, their own bodies become a driving force in their practice. Trans bodies are inherently changing and are temporarily unstable along axes of identity, perception or physicality. Artists occupy the important role of documentarians, acting as keepers of their own stories to transcend erasure and destruction. Through documentation, the human form becomes a medium and subject that resists the passage of time. This article will look at ways trans artists document their personal identity and presentation through the body, and how their choices of materiality and process contribute to the important and irrevocable statement that we were here.
