Abstract

Driving along the Sea to Sky Highway offers a picturesque view of Howe Sound mediated by the asphalt. Homes punctuate and privatize the landscape, while attractions commodify the view. Originally built to serve Britannia Beach’s mining facilities in the early 1900s, the highway today functions as a transitory threshold, separating the coniferous forests from the coastline and moving people and goods north. Research reveals a fragmented public edge that disrupts the coastline and limits collective engagement with the Sound.
