Urban planning which can be defined as systematic planning, development and control of urban areas aims at maximization of functionality, sustainability and general quality of life in the cities. Nevertheless, it faces chronic problems, such as traffic jams, poor management of resources, environmental pollution, and insufficiency of outdated infrastructure. Such problems are often intensified by accelerated urbanization, inadequate enforcement of policies and dynamic socio-economic changes which disorient the fine balance of development and environmental custodianship. This paper is an attempt to thoroughly explore the causes, symptoms and the dynamics of these urban predicaments over time. It examines the root causes of them, the key stakeholders, and the most affected systems, as well as the Ripple effects on the urban ecosystems. The literature review was conducted in detail to cover the existing detection and mitigation methods based on interdisciplinary understanding of intelligent transportation systems, sustainable urban design, and developing technologies, such as artificial intelligence, fuzzy logic, and geographic information system (GIS). After this, a comparative analysis is undertaken in order to compare these methodologies with parameters like cost-effectiveness, scalability, environmental sustainability, and adaptability. Developed simulation and statistical analysis facilitates a powerful, context-sensitive assessment framework that is specific to a variety of urban situations.
