The Health and Welfare Aspects of Keeping Exotic Reptiles as Pets: Literature Review of Risks

This compilation study comprehensively examines the effects of keeping exotic reptiles as pets in the home on both human-animal health and animal welfare. The study addresses factors such as trade volume, housing conditions, zoonotic disease risks, and expertise in reptile health. The analysis results indicate that while popularity is rapidly increasing, the lack of corresponding growth in knowledge and experience will lead to significant health issues. It also reveals that concerning outcomes, particularly regarding animal welfare, may continue to escalate.
