The γ -ray beam system under implementation at the Extreme Light Infrastructure – Nuclear Physics facility in Romania will deliver brilliant γ -ray beams with energies up to 20 MeV. Several instruments for measuring the parameters of the γ -ray beam have already been implemented for use at ELI-NP. Here we investigate the use of a fast ionization chamber to continuously monitor the γ -ray beam intensity at ELI-NP by measuring fission fragments from the photofission of 238 U. The fast ionization chamber has been successfully tested at the GELINA facility at EC JRC-Geel using neutrons.
