Greywater Quality Assessment and Reuse Potential in Mymensingh: Towards Sustainable Urban Water Use

The onsite reuse and recycling of greywater present a sustainable approach to reducing overall urban water demand in the Mymensingh City Corporation area. This study aimed to assess the quality of greywater generated from households and mosques to evaluate its suitability for reuse. A total of 10 raw greywater samples, each with three repeated field samples, were collected from kitchens, mosques, laundries, and bathrooms across various sites. Among the sources, mosque greywater emerged as more suitable for reuse with the required treatment, owing to its relatively low total dissolved solids (272 ppm) and pH level (9.75). In contrast, kitchen and laundry greywater exhibited the highest contamination levels, characterized by elevated Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and highly alkaline conditions, rendering them unsuitable for reuse without proper treatment. Greywater from bathrooms and mixed sources showed potential for reuse following basic filtration and pH adjustment. A combination of aerobic biological processes, physical filtration, and disinfection could be the most cost-effective and feasible treatment method for greywater recycling in the area. Additionally, reclaiming nutrients from greywater can enhance soil quality and serve as a viable method for groundwater recharge. Therefore, it is recommended that local authorities prioritize greywater recycling initiatives to reduce dependency on fresh groundwater resources.
